iConnectivity presents iConnectMIDI at Macworld 2011

I stopped by the iConnectivity booth here at Macworld because I'd heard about a zero-latency MIDI-to-iOS hub they were releasing. As you'll see in the video below -- at least for musicians with MIDI elements in their kit -- it was worth the stop! Using CoreMIDI (iOS 4.2 only), the iConnectMIDI unit can provide a connection between multiple (up to eight) MIDI sources (both legacy DIN and USB->MIDI) and your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or even a Mac or Windows desktop. In the demo they set up, there were several controllers all playing different instruments through a third-party iPad app (Music Studio, US$14.99), with an additional iPod touch controlling pitch bend on the bass through its accelerometer. Pretty neat.

The unit will ship in April for under $200, and we'll be bringing you a hands-on review in February. More information on the device can be found at the iConnectMIDI website.

DMG backup, archive, and transfer to remote machine script

The following hint creates a .DMG of a given directory/folder, then uses SCP to move it from your machine to another machine. It also appends a date onto the .DMG name, and lastly sends you an email that it was transferred successfully (or not).

The script has a few assumptions:
  • The source machine can send you email from the command line, if Postfix is working correctly.
  • The source machine has a password-less SCP connection to the destination machine. If not, see this hint for help setting that up.
Once you've moved the script to a location on your machine, you'll need to make it executable by typing the following in Terminal:

sudo chmod +x dmgbackup-script.sh

Of course, the script can then be called via a cron job or other scheduler if desired. Thanks to BobHarris at the Apple.com » Support » Discussions » Mac ...

Viewing full webpages on iPhone

A lot of webpages automatically redirect an iPhone to a less than full featured mobile version of the site when viewed with the Safari app on the iPhone, limiting the usability of the site.

Many sites can be viewed in full on the Opera Mini Web browser app (free), including eBay. Under settings, you can change mobile view to off, unlike in Safari.

[crarko adds: There is a growing number of web browsers for iOS, many designed to overcome shortcomings in Mobile Safari. A number of them are Universal, unlike the Opera Mini app (currently). You can search for them all in the App Store.]

John Carmack: Sony NGP a 'generation beyond' smartphones

id Software co-founder John Carmack said in the wake of the Sony NGP that the new console was in an entirely different class than smartphones for gaming. The hardware would be a "generation beyond" in performance even next to phones that shipped with performance similar to the quad-core processor and graphics that aren't yet on any other device. Sony will have the advantage of low-level programming standards that will help any game run faster than it would if it had to use a higher level standard, like OpenGL....

iTunes 10.1.2 available, adds CDMA iPhone Compatibility

Apple has released iTunes 10.1.2 today, ripe with support for the CDMA (Verizon) iPhone. Apple's cryptic release notes are stingy with details, saying:

"iTunes 10.1.2 provides a number of important stability and performance improvements. iTunes 10.1.2 syncs music, movies, and more with iPhone 4 (CDMA model) and provides a number of important stability and performance improvements."

Those of you thinking of inviting a shiny new Verizon iPhone to your home next month will be ready to roll with this update (of course, everyone should nab the update). You'll find it in Software Update now.
