Automatically cd to active Finder directory in new Terminal window

There exist small apps that will open a new Terminal window or tab and automatically cd to the directory of the active Finder window. This hint describes a way to have the Terminal always cd to the directory of the active Finder window whenever you open a new Terminal window or tab -- without the use of an app or any other third-party solution.

In other words, whenever you open a Terminal window or tab, if there is an open Finder window, the Terminal will start in the directory shown in the Finder window.

To make this happen, all you need to do is add the following line somewhere in your .bash_profile file in your home directory:
cd `osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to if window 1 exists then if target of window 1 as string is not ":" then get POSIX path of (t ...

Multilingual Photoshop CS5 suddenly talks only English

Last week I was asked how it could be that a German Photoshop CS5 from one day to another 'forgot' the German language and only shows English menus and dialog boxes.

I thought this couldn't be -- maybe the German resource had vanished or the order of the languages in the System Preferences was wrong.

But the German localization files in Contents » Resources were there, and the German language was the first language in System Preferences so I did some research on the issue.

Photoshop CS5 needs a file named tw10428.dat in a subfolder named Locales » de_DE » Support Files of its application directory.

If you install a new scanner or camera there might be dialog box that asks if the TWAIN driver should be updated/replaced. In some cases this results in moving this .dat-File to the Trash and Photoshop forgets its multilingual capability. Check before you empty the Trash. In my case it was also possible to c ...

Why new Kindles will supplement, not replace, my iPad

As much as I'm tied into Apple's ecosystem for hardware and apps, my e-book loyalty lies with Amazon. Luckily, Amazon's design choices and pricing strategies, as revealed Wednesday with its latest Kindle line, mean I can have my cake and eat it, too.

Report suggests iTunes store coming to additional European countries

A report from Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita claims Apple is preparing to launch its iTunes music store in ten new countries throughout Europe. These new additions may include Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and seven other unnamed locations.

If Rzeczpospolita's report is correct, this rollout will significantly boost the reach of Apple's music store. Apple currently operates its iTunes music store in a little over 20 countries globally. Its reach is hindered by music licensing agreements that limits sales to select countries. As a result, the iTunes Music store only logs about 12 million song downloads each month. It is outpaced by Apple's App Store which has a wider reach and over 31 million app downloads each month.

LaCie announces LaPlug, turns USB drives into cloud storage

LaCie have debuted a device that is essentially their answer to the PogoPlug, dubbed LaPlug, which can turn any USB-based drive -- even thumb drives -- into wireless backup devices, web-accessible cloud storage, a streaming multimedia server or just network-attached storage. Users connect the LaPlug to the network and then attach drives to it via USB2. USB Postscript printers can also be made wireless with the device....

Police break up fake iPhone ring in China

Chinese police have arrested five members of an organized gang that was making and selling fake iPhones. The members would buy components, some of them genuine, on the black market and assemble the phones in rented Shanghai apartments. The police seized about 200 iPhones in the raid. Each iPhone had an estimated build cost of 2,000 yuan (US$313 as of this writing) and sold for almost twice that on the black market. These dupes were so well done that many people had a hard time distinguishing the fake iPhones from the real ones.

It's always been known that imitation iPhones were available in China, but the extent of this forgery was not known until an American blogger posted up images of a phony Apple store earlier this year. This report kicked off a series of subsequent reports detailing similar unauthorized stores that were selling bogus Apple products.

Daily Mac App: Shakespeare in Bits (updated)

While William Shakespeare's works are revered and deserve the praise, it's hard to grasp what's going on in his plays at times, especially if you're just starting your studies. While the language is still English, at times it is as foriegn to us as the words "iPhone," "iPad," "tweet" or "LOL" would be to the Bard.

Mindconnex Learning Limited is helping to bridge the cultural gap through its series of desktop, iPhone and iPad software, Shakespeare in Bits. Shakespeare's plays are broken down into short bites. When a play is loaded, you can see a list of characters and detailed plot analysis exploring themes, imagery, language and more.

The plays themselves are broken down by act, then by scene, then into smaller chunks of text. Animation is on one side while a menu on the right lets a user toggle between the play text, notes and a synopsis. In text mode, symbols beside the lines give more insight into the context and clicking highlighted words reveals the modern equivalent.

I checked out a trial version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," ironically the first Shakespeare play I ever read as a child, and immensely enjoyed it. The animation is simple, but does a good job at conveying the action. The voice acting is extremely well-done. As the animated scenes run, the play text highlights the person speaking at that time. Subtitles can be shown, and the play can either auto-advance or stop after each bit is played.

The version of Shakespeare in Bits directly from its website, available as a trial, runs on Adobe Air. The Mac App Store versions are native Cocoa apps and has a slightly different multiwindow interface. Retail price is $19.99 per play with "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth" currently available in addition to "A Midsummer Night's Dream." While this might seem steep, these are a good investment as plays such as "Romeo and Juliet" tend to come up repeatedly in high school and college, and this is an excellent learning tool.

Updated: Clarified the differences between the Mac App Store and website builds of the Shakespeare in Bits programs.

10.7: View Linux SMB servers in Path Finder

I use Path Finder for some fancier features, but since upgrading to Lion, I could not see my Linux SMB server in the side panel. After waiting for their Lion patch with no change, I figured out a very simple solution.

For whatever reason, Path Finder can't find or list Samba servers like it did in Snow Leopard. But, if you either install or modify an Avahi daemon on the SMB server, and advertize SMB services, Path Finder will see the server again.

After installing the Avahi daemon in a manner appropriate for your distribution, just create and save this simple file to /etc/avahi/services (on the server):
 <?xml version="1.0" standalone='no'?> <!DOCTYPE service-group SYSTEM "avahi-service.dtd">     Samba Share ...
