ECS demos PadFone-like tablet with iPhone dock

Better known for its mainboards, ECS used its presence at Computex to show an unusual tablet that would serve as an extension of a smartphone. Much like the ASUS PadFone, the 9.7-inch tablet would have a dock on its back to cradle a smartphone. Where ASUS' model is specific to its Android companion, the version on show was designed to cradle an iPhone 4 and should also eventually have modular support for Android, Windows Phone, and other iOS devices....

Rolling Stone co-founder slams publishers for embracing Apple's iPad

Following a wave of magazines embracing Apple's in-app subscription plans, the co-founder of Rolling Stone has gone against the grain and categorized the industry's move as "sheer insanity and insecurity and fear."

iPad 2 Even Better Than the Original

In USA Today, reviewer Edward Baig argues that the ?slimmed-down iPad 2? makes what was already ?splendid? even better, citing ?headline additions? of front- and rear-facing cameras with FaceTime and PhotoBooth, a ?snappier? Apple A5 dual-core processor, and ?really cool? Smart Cover. Baig calls the new GarageBand and iMovie apps for iPad ?a bargain for would-be rock stars and would-be Spielbergs.?

ASUS outs MacBook Air-like UX21, Eee PC X101 with MeeGo

ASUS' slew of Computex rollouts on Monday included notebooks and netbooks designed as Windows alternatives to the MacBook Air. The UX21 shares the tapered, all-aluminum body but is even thinner than its Apple counterpart at 0.67 inches thick and can be optioned up to a Core i7 processor. It similarly depends on SATA 6Gbps-based SSD storage and has custom software that takes more explicit advantage of the flash drive: it can resume Windows 7 in two seconds and stay in hibernate mode for up to a full week....

Ticket To Ride iPad game is great, could be greater

ticket to ride ipad app

The brand new iPad implementation of Ticket To Ride is close to perfect, but it needs a few more features before I can wholeheartedly recommend the game. As it stands, if you like Alan R. Moons' wonderful board game and enjoy playing online (or against AI opponents), then get thee to the App Store post haste and fork over your US$6.99. If you're looking for a way to enjoy the game with multiple people around the same iPad (as you can do with the other official app based on a Days of Wonder game, the great Small World), don't bother.

I hope DoW manages to update this app soon with a same-device multiplayer option (either using open cards or using an iPhone/iPod touch "hand" method the way Scrabble does), because it's clear that there are many gamers out there who feel it needs to be implemented. I like what we have now in Ticket To Ride, but read on to see if this is a journey you'd like to go on.

Microsoft makes more in Android royalties than Windows Phone

Microsoft is making five times more money from its Android royalty schemes than from its own Windows Phone 7 platform, Asymco's Horace Dediu said in a dissection of a Citi research note. Based on claims by analyst Walter Pritchard that HTC is paying $5 per phone for Android-related patents Microsoft says it owns, Dediu determined that HTC has had to pay a total of $150 million for the 30 million Google-based phones it has shipped so far. With Microsoft have so far only reported shipping two million WP7 devices and charging $15 for the OS on each phone, it would have...

Teenager Targeted by Apple in White iPhone 4 Lawsuit Interviewed

As we reported yesterday, Apple earlier this week filed a lawsuit against teenager Fei Lam and his parents over Lam's sale of unauthorized white iPhone 4 parts, alleging trademark infringement and dilution. At the time, we noted that Apple had simultaneously filed a voluntary dismissal of the case, suggesting that a settlement may have already been reached.

But in an interview with Fast Company, Lam reveals that he knows essentially nothing about the lawsuit, having learned about it only as reports spread through the media yesterday. Lam notes that a settlement has not been reached, but it will obviously be a topic of discussions apparently set to be held between Lam and Apple's lawyers "within the next month".
Q: When did you first find out about the lawsuit? Did Apple call or send a letter?
A: I came back from school today and saw your email. Lol.

Q: So have your parents mostly been handling the case then?
A: I told Apple's lawyer that I'm sick and to meet when I get better. That was last week. I'm [sic] been handling the whole thing

Q: So you have not settled?
A: I think that will be decided in the meeting.
According to Lam, he no longer has a lawyer representing him in the case, as he is unable to afford one. Consequently, he says that he will be meeting alone with Apple's lawyers at their offices in New York City.

Lam notes that he did not make $130,000 in profits as some reports have claimed, although he declined to specify exactly how much he made from the venture or where those profits have gone. The initial report on his business noted that he had sold $130,000 worth of the parts, but it is unknown how much he had to pay his Chinese supplier for them.

Consumer PC sales growth declines for first time ever: iPad the culprit?

Business Insider has posted a chart that tracks consumer PC growth from June of 2007 to March of 2011. According to the chart consumer PC sales have grown by at least 10 percent every quarter, until December 2010 when it remained flat. In the quarter ending March 2011, consumer PC sales actually went down 4 percent.

Business Insider says that "Microsoft's consumer PC sales growth has pretty much never declined. Not even when Microsoft released Vista. Not even when the economy went in the toilet. But suddenly, the growth of sales is about to go negative." Business Insider attributes this coming negative slump to the iPad. While you can present the same data in many different ways and draw different conclusions about what's causing a particular decline, I do think Business Insider has a point.

For many consumers an iPad is more than enough. If you only need a computer to browse the net, why buy a rigid box you need to sit at a desk to use? Why not just get a tablet you can use from the comfort of your couch? Do you think the iPad causing a decline in consumer PC sales? Let us know in the poll below.

Starting foreign language Acrobat on English OS X

Acrobat 10 doesn't accept serial numbers for international versions of Acrobat (or the CS suite) if the operating system is running in a different language than the purchased one. This hint discusses a few workarounds.

Acrobat comes with several language packages and runs by default with the language of the operating system. In this case however it doesn't accept serial numbers which are bound to a specific language. As it seems there are three work arounds (the first two are also mentioned by the Adobe support team):

The obvious one: Run OSX in the same language as Acrobat was purchased in. At least in my case not an option.

Use a program such as Language Switcher. I have not tried that but it probably does the same as option 3 below, only temporarily.

Remove the English language package (of course at your own risk): Open the Acrobat package, navigate to Contents/Resources and ...

Verizon iPhone Prelaunch Testing: "Acme" Code Name, Text Check-Ins to Ensure Security

TechnoBuffalo shares claimed details of Verizon's internal testing for the iPhone 4, highlighting security measures taken by Apple and the carriers to maintain control over the test units.

According to the report, a small number of Verizon employees were provided with iPhones two weeks before the public debut, using them out in the field to ensure that there were no last-minutes hitches in real-world performance. Staffers receiving iPhones were of course required to sign non-disclosure agreements regarding the new hardware, which the source unsurprisingly describes as being above and beyond what is typically required for unreleased hardware. Those privy to the testing process were also reportedly instructed to never refer to the iPhone by name, instead using the code name "Acme" to refer to the device.

But what is particularly interesting are the security methods reportedly employed to help ensure that the handsets remained in the possession of the testers, a system that required testers to manually report in on their devices every twelve hours.
Our source describes a unique protocol requiring staffers to text a secret PIN code to a dedicated phone number every 12 hours. This served as ongoing confirmation that the handset was still in the proper hands. So no PIN code, no functionality.
Early field testing in Apple Stores around the country reportedly began as much as six months ahead of the Verizon iPhone's launch, but it was only in the last several weeks before launch that testing opened up beyond engineering staff to a broader, albeit still select, group of Verizon employees. As is par for the course with Apple product releases, the vast majority of Verizon employees were kept in the dark about the iPhone testing and launch plans.
