Garmin intros StreetPilot onDemand GPS app for iOS

Garmin has launched StreetPilot onDemand, its latest GPS app for iOS. The title is essentially identical to the original StreetPilot, but with the key difference of a separate pricing model. While the original app is avalaible for a flat $60 pricetag, onDemand has an initial cost of just 99 cents, the catch being a need for a monthly or annual subscription to enjoy "premium" features such as turn-by-turn navigation, traffic updates, and public transportation data integrated into pedestrian directions. Each copy of onDemand comes with a 30-day trial of the Premium...

Shrine of Apple offers visual history of Apple's hardware

The Shrine of Apple website is worth a look for the diehard Apple fan who wants to reminisce about Apple's product history. The site provides photos and video for many products that Apple has made. Each section has a description of the hardware or software, specifications, and a poll that lets you say whether you wanted the product, owned one in the past or own one now. There are a few gaps here and there that need to be filled in (the iPad section is blank) but it's a nice effort that, once completed, will chronicle Apple's long history as an innovator in the computing and mobile phone marketplace.

Can HTML5 replace an iPad app? Financial Times to find out

One company is about to find out how web apps compete with native iOS App Store offerings in a very direct sense. The Financial Times is out of the App Store, and now depends on an HTML5 tablet-optimized site alone for presence on Apple devices.

Apple Seeds OS X Lion 10.7.2 Build 11C43 and Other iCloud Updates to Developers

Apple today pushed out several new developer seeds for its OS X platform, continuing to move forward with testing of iCloud. The updates come one week after the previous seeds, which also came alongside the sixth beta version of iOS 5. Among today's new releases for OS X:

- OS X Lion 10.7.2 Update (Build 11C43)
- iCloud for Lion beta 9
- iPhoto 9.2 beta 3

The new OS X Lion 10.7.2 build continues to list no known issues and asks developers to focus their testing on AirPort, AppKit, GraphicsDrivers, iCal, iChat, Mac App Store, Mail, Spotlight, and Time Machine.

There are no new updates posted on the iOS side at this time.

Apple has announced that it will be launching iOS 5 and iCloud this fall. The company has been rumored to be launching new iPhone hardware in early-to-mid October, and iOS 5 and iCloud should be going live right around that same time. Apple will almost certainly be holding a media event a week or two ahead of that launch to introduce the new hardware and give final details on iOS 5 and iCloud.

Thanks, Chanyoon!

Dolphin Browser on iOS is solid, but will you use it?

Boasting 9 million users, one the most popular third-party browsers for Google Android devices, Dolphin Browser, is now available for Apple iOS devices. My hands-on shows many nice features: tabbed browsing, gestures, and a Webzine view. But there's one huge sticking point for Dolphin on iOS.

'iTunes Match' Allows Both Streaming and Downloading of Music

Apple released a developer beta of the iTunes Match system this evening. The system is described by Apple as follows:
iTunes Match stores your complete music library in iCloud, allowing you to enjoy your collection anywhere, anytime, on any iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or computer.
Insanely Great Mac provides this nice walkthrough video which shows you how the service works. It also shows that this is both a streaming and downloading service.

For the $25 yearly fee, iTunes Match will scan your existing iTunes music library and allow you to access it from any of your iTunes-linked Macs or iOS devices. Songs that already exist in Apple's iTunes music store will be streamed straight from Apple's master copy (at 256kbps bitrate) without a need to upload the songs yourself. Songs that don't exist in iTunes will be uploaded to iCloud. Either way, all your music (up to 25,000 songs) will be accessible from your various computers and iOS devices.

iOS 5 Music App streaming a song. iCloud button allows you to download locally.

What wasn't clear before is the fact that music can be either streamed or downloaded locally to any of your computers or devices. While the video only shows the service on a Mac, we've confirmed it works the same way on iOS devices. So, essentially, you will have instant access to your entire music library from all of your Macs, iPhones, iPads, or iPod touches for only $25/year. This ability on your iOS devices means your music library won't need to take up valuable space on the device itself, as long as you have some sort of internet connection.

iTunes Match is expected to launch alongside iOS 5 this fall.

Update: Insanely Great Mac has now posted a video showing how it works on an iOS device:

OS X Lion bug may affect Windows file sharing

A bug has been discovered in OS X Lion Server that appears when a user tries to share a file with extended attributes with a Windows XP or Windows 7 system. The bug was first discovered by Steve Maser, a senior systems administrator at the University of Michigan's Office of Technology Transfer. In a message posted to the OS X Server list, Maser details the bug:

"If a file/folder on your 10.7.x Mac (and this includes Mac OS X Server) has some specific (?) extended attributes on it and you do Windows Sharing for Windows users to access the file/folders -- you won't be able to pull the file down to your Windows desktop. I verified this with Windows 7, and the Apple guy also verified it with Windows XP."

According to Steve, the copy process appears to begin, before halting with an error message like, "the file name you specified is not valid or too long," or less frequently, an "Invalid MS-DOS Function" message.

Maser also notes a workaround he devised. It's not a fix but it will allow for a file to be copied by removing the attributes from the file's metadata. Apple hasn't acknowledged the bug yet, but per Masers posting, they now know about it and and fix should be added to OS X Lion server in the future.

OS X Lion accepts any LDAP password, creates enterprise network nightmare

There's nothing more frightening to a network administrator than to have a potential security hole that can open a network to attacks from outside. Unfortunately, the latest incarnation of Mac OS X -- Lion -- reportedly has a major security issue related to Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP).

LDAP servers often contain sensitive enterprise data, so a successful attack on one of the servers is a bonanza to hackers. For some reason, Macs running Lion that use LDAP to authenticate users to shared resources work just fine for the initial login. After that point, Lion users can use any password and still log in.

Macs running older versions of OS X, Windows PCs, and Linux machines authenticate properly on the same LDAP servers, but the Lion machines exhibit the bad behavior. There are no security problems with Macs running Lion and logging into networks that use protocols other than LDAP.

This issue may create concern in the minds of network administrators who are being pressured to add more Macs to their networks. A researcher at iSec Partners, Alex Stamos, recently noted that large corporate customers should think twice before deploying large numbers of Macs in enterprises. Speaking at the Black Hat security conference earlier this month, Stamos mentioned that iSec Partners had figured out an easy way to steal hundreds of passwords from enterprise servers by connecting a Mac to the network.

Network admins who think that Macs may be an open gate to their data are not going to be amenable to connecting the devices to their enterprise networks.

Daily iPhone App: Star Legends

Star Legends is the release title of Blackstar, an MMO whose origin I've recounted on the site here before. Spacetime Studios was a company formed from the ashes of an unreleased PC MMO that went on to make Pocket Legends, a full mobile MMO that started on iOS and then moved on to Android. Earlier this year, we heard that the company planned to use the built-up Blackstar concepts and work to create a sci-fi themed MMO for iOS, and Star Legends, released last week and now available for free on the App Store, is the product of that work.

Like Pocket Legends, the game is a full World of Warcraft-style MMO, with persistent characters, environments, and lots of instances and dungeons to fight through. Of course, it's all sci-fi based instead of fantasy, but Spacetime built up a really in-depth library for its planned title, and Star Legends presumably has made full use of it (with lots more content to come, no doubt). If you've never played a game like this, it can be a little confusing, but if you've ever jumped in to an MMO before, you'll be amazed to see what Spacetime has done with the genre on a mobile platform.

The game is microtransaction-based, but there's plenty to do for free right away. If you're a fan of Pocket Legends, or just want to see what kind of magic Spacetime has been working, definitely check it out.
